Albania has the highest proportion of pretrial detainees in its prison population across member states of the Council of Europe. As of April 2025, it stands at 61.6% of the total prison population.
About Erion
Erion has spent his career working tirelessly for his city.
Erion was first elected Mayor of Tirana in June 2015 and has since been re-elected twice in 2019 and 2023. During this time, he has helped Tirana to grow.
Introduced several sustainability initiatives into Tirana, including the creation of green spaces, promotion of public transport, ‘car-free’ days, and a project to reduce the use of plastic bags.
Overseen projects improving Tirana’s facilities and aesthetics, including the renovation of Skanderberg Square as a pedestrian-friendly public area, the upgrading of municipal infrastructure, sidewalks, and bike paths, and the construction of new kindergartens and playgrounds.
Promoted transparency in government and empowered young people to engage in academia and civic life. Including the creation of an app that contains a database of public works and services – the first of its kind in Albania.
Championed European values, pushing Albania forward on its path toward integration and progress. This allowed the city to host the European Union Western Balkan summit.
